At dinner that afternoon, after I finished eating, I looked at Oliver. “You ready to go?”

“What?” he frowned.

“To the library so we can work,” I nodded. We’d planned to meet that afternoon after we spoke on Saturday. “Did you forget?”

“We planned that before you got hurt.”

“Yeah? And?” I cocked my head.

“You need to rest,” he shook his head.

I rolled my eyes and stood up from the table, gently hitting his shoulder. “Come on.”

He looked at me with concern. “You didn’t even eat much.”

“Yeah, the medicine I’m taking doesn’t leave me with much of an appetite,” I sighed. “But unfortunately for you, it also makes me a stubborn bitch. Let’s go.”

“I don’t think that’s the medicine,” Eli laughed.

I rolled my eyes and flipped him off as Oliver stood. “I’ll see you guys later.”

They all waved at us as Oliver and I headed out of the cafeteria. He looked like he thought I was going to shatter if I took too hard a step. I took a deep breath, trying not to be frustrated with him. I knew it was hard for them to see me like this and know they couldn’t fix it. I’d feel the same if it was any of them. But Oliver was taking it harder than everyone else. Every time I saw him that day, he looked like he was a few seconds away from screaming at someone.

“Are you okay?” I frowned.

He shrugged. “I’m fine. I don’t want to work very long, though.”

His tone implied he was decidedly not fine, but I knew pushing him wasn’t going to help. When we got to the library, we pulled out our notebooks.

“Want to start with Incantations?” I asked. “I saw you were taking notes on the silent incantations yesterday, so that--”

“No,” he said firmly. “I don’t want to work on those.”

I nodded. “Okay. What should we work on?”

“I don’t care,” he sighed. “Are you sure you’re alright?”

“Oliver, I broke my arm,” I forced a smile to reassure him. “I’m not in any pain, and I’m not hungry or tired. I’m fine.”

He leaned back in his chair and nodded, bouncing his leg up and down.

“What about Introductory Conjuring?” I asked. “Now we’re working on short-distance conjuring. I know that’s hard for me. Do you want to work on that?”

“I guess,” he shrugged. The whole time, he was staring at my arm. I pressed it closer to my side and nodded, taking my pen and setting it on the other side of the table from him. He leaned forward on his elbows and looked at the pen. Every few seconds, his eyes would dart over to me.

“Oliver, focus.” I tried not to sound annoyed, but I’m sure I did.

He shook his head and sighed. “I can’t focus on this shit right now.”

“Then why are we here?” I frowned, my irritation mounting.

“Because you dragged me up here!”

“We agreed to work together!”

He sighed and ran his hands through his hair. “That was before you got hurt!”

“Oliver,” I rolled my eyes, “that has nothing
